A few years ago, I had a goal of one day leaving full-time work for self-employment. I was working Monday-Friday like most people while trying to grow my side hustle. I was waiting and waiting for the perfect time to make the leap.  I was scared for all the “what if’s” that were racing through my brain. “What if I can’t make money?” “What if I can’t find more clients?” “What if I fail?” The fear never went away and that perfect time never came, but I did it anyway.

Change is scary for many of us and it’s normal (and good) to feel nervous or afraid to make major changes in our lives. But, when it comes down to either staying the same of making a change, most people want to do what is comfortable and easy. Change is almost ALWAYS GOOD. It pushes us in different ways and gives us an opportunity to accomplish things you never though possible. I don’t mean make big life changes on a whim, but if you know you want to do something, DO IT! Make a plan, stick to it, and make it happen. Life is just too short not to.

Last year, Steve and I decided to move to North Carolina, away from our friends and family. We wanted to go on an adventure and see what it was like to move to a totally different area than we were used to. For six months we saved money, looked for jobs, researched apartments online, and sold a lot of our belongings. This was a huge change for us, but all that planning paid off once we got to our new destination. Leaving my job has a similar story. It took time, planning, and sticking to something month after month, year after year. In both scenarios, these drastic changes were SCARY. It would not have mattered how much (or little) planning was involved, change is hard.

Three months before leaving my job, I got a piece of advice that I will always remember when facing change. “What is the worst thing that could happen? Even if you are totally honest with yourself, the worst is not that bad.” This is so true!

Don’t let fear hold you back from the things you want to do. Even if you are scared, JUST DO IT SCARED.
